Jen and I flew down to Los Angeles to surprise some of our friends at a zinfandel wine tasting dinner after the ZAP trade grand tasting.  The surprise was fantastic!  The excitement and look on each of their faces was tremendous. :)

Our friends get together once a month to do a blind wine tasting for a particular varietal or a wine region of the world.  This month the theme for the tasting was zinfandel.  The tasting evaluation approach is random for each person at the dinner.  After all the wines have been tasted, each person is asked for their top three wines.  The top wines are then tablulated and read aloud.

The following wines tasted were:
#1: 2004 York Creek, Ridge, Zinfandel (zinfandel and petite sirah blend) — $23
#2: 2006 SinZin, Alexander Valley — $14
#3: 2005 Biker, Four Zines, Paso Robles — $20
#4: 2006 Dover Canyon, Reserve, Paso Robles — $25
#5: 2007 Cujo, Dover Canyon — $23
#6: 2005 St. Francis, Old Vine Zinfandel — $25
#7: 2006 St. Francis, Old Vine Zinfandel – $17
#8a: 2004 Zinfandel, Agua Fulce, Angeles Crest — $5
#8b: 2007 Nine Gables Vineyard, Fiddle Zin, Late harvest Zinfandel — $23
#9: 2005 Biauchi, Zen Ranch Vineyard, Paso Robles — $10
#10: 2006 Artezin, Mendocino — $18
#12: 2002 Collins Vineyard, Limerick Lane Vineyard, Russian River Valley (in a magnum) — $60

The voting for the best wines was:
1st place: 1 (6 votes), 7 (2 votes), 10 (2 votes), 12 (2 votes), 2, 4
2nd place: 12 (6 votes), 7 (5 votes), 4, 10
3rd place: 12 (3 votes), 1 (2 votes), 6 (2 votes), 2, 4, 5, 7, 10

Clearly, the 2002 Limerick Lane and the 2006 St. Francis zinfandel were both very well received.  Here are some notes on these wines:

  • 2002 Collins Vineyard Zinfandel rated 92 Points in the December 15, 2004 issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine.

“A great Zin, rich and opulent. Floods the mouth with briary blackberry,
blueberry, cherry chocolate and pepper flavors that just take over the
palate. Yet the wine is dry and balanced, with firm, ripe tannins. One of
the best Zins of the year.”

  • 2002 Collins Vineyard Zinfandel ranked #21 of the top 100 wines of 2004 in the December 15, 2004 issue of Wine Enthusiast Magazine
